Key Differences from Other Countries
The UK has some unique requirements that catch people off guard:
- Background is NOT white — HMPO requires light grey or cream, not pure white. This is different from the US and most other countries.
- No glasses at all — Since 2018, glasses are completely banned in UK passport photos, even prescription ones.
- Stricter on expression — Absolutely neutral. Even a slight smile can cause rejection.
Common mistake: Using a pure white background. UK passport photos specifically need light grey or cream. WithSwag has the exact UK-compliant background color built in.
