Key fact: UK driving licence photos follow exactly the same rules as UK passport photos. If you have a recent passport photo, you can use it for your DVLA application.
Full Licence vs. Provisional Licence
The photo requirements are identical for both:
- Provisional driving licence — First application, need a new photo
- Full driving licence — After passing your test, same photo specs
- Renewal — Every 10 years, new photo required
- Replacement — If lost or stolen, new photo needed
How to Apply
Online (GOV.UK)
Apply at gov.uk. You can upload a digital photo or use your passport photo from the HMPO database.
By Post (D1 Form)
Send a paper application with two identical passport-standard photos. Photos must be 35×45mm, printed on photo-quality paper.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Glasses worn — Not allowed since 2016
- Wrong background — Must be light grey or cream, not white
- Smiling — Neutral expression required
- Shadows on face or background — Even lighting needed
- Photo too old — Must be recent
- Red eye — Not acceptable
- Low quality print — Must be sharp, on photo paper
