Detailed Requirements

Face and Expression

Switzerland follows ICAO biometric standards. Your face must be centered and occupy 70–80% of the photo. Expression must be completely neutral with mouth closed. Both eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera. The face must be evenly illuminated without shadows.

Background

Switzerland requires a uniform light grey background. Pure white is not accepted. The background must be completely even — no gradients, shadows, or patterns. This is consistent with most other European countries.

Tip: Swiss passport applications are handled at the Einwohnerkontrolle (residents' registration office) in your Gemeinde. They check photos carefully. WithSwag applies the exact light grey background that Swiss authorities require.

Glasses Policy

While Switzerland hasn't formally banned glasses, they are strongly discouraged. If you choose to wear them, there must be absolutely no glare on the lenses, no tinted lenses, and both eyes must be fully visible. The safest approach is to remove glasses entirely.

Head Coverings

Head coverings are not permitted unless worn for religious reasons. The face must be fully visible from chin to forehead, and both sides of the face must be clearly visible.

Schengen Association

Although Switzerland is not an EU member, it is part of the Schengen Area. Swiss passport photos follow the same ICAO biometric standards used across Schengen countries, making them compatible with EU travel requirements.
