Detailed Requirements
Face and Expression
Norway follows strict biometric standards. Your face must be centered and occupy 70–80% of the photo. Expression must be completely neutral with mouth closed. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible, looking directly at the camera. The face must be evenly illuminated without shadows.
Background
Norway requires a uniform light grey background. Pure white is not accepted. The background must be completely even — no gradients, shadows, or patterns. This is one of the most common rejection reasons for Norwegian passport photos.
Glasses Policy
Since 2018, glasses are not allowed in Norwegian passport and ID photos. All eyewear must be removed, including prescription glasses. This aligns with the broader European trend toward stricter biometric standards.
Head Coverings
Head coverings are not permitted unless worn for religious reasons. The face must be fully visible from chin to forehead, and both sides of the face must be clearly visible.
Norwegian National ID Card
Norway introduced a national ID card (nasjonalt ID-kort) in 2020. The photo requirements are identical to passport photos — 35×45mm, light grey background, biometric-compliant.
