Photo Requirements in Detail
Face and Expression
Japan has very strict face positioning rules. The face must be centered, with a neutral expression. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible. Mouth must be closed. Hair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows.
Background
Plain white background with no shadows, patterns, or gradients. Japan is stricter than many countries about background uniformity.
Glasses
Since 2021, Japan does not accept passport photos with any type of glasses — prescription, sunglasses, or tinted lenses. Remove all eyewear.
Head Coverings
No hats, caps, or head coverings unless worn for religious reasons. Even then, the full face from hairline to chin must be visible.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Face too large or too small — Must be exactly 34mm ± 2mm
- Glasses in photo — Not allowed since 2021
- Shadows on background — Background must be uniformly white
- Hair covering eyes — Both eyes and eyebrows must be fully visible
