Detailed Requirements

Face and Expression

Your face must be centered and occupy 70–80% of the photo height. Expression must be completely neutral — no smile, no raised eyebrows. Mouth must be closed. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible. The face must be evenly lit with no shadows.

Background

France requires a uniform light-colored background — light grey or light blue are the standard choices. The background must be free of patterns, shadows, and other objects. Pure white is sometimes accepted but can cause overexposure issues with lighter skin tones.

Tip: WithSwag's AI background removal can replace any background with the exact light grey tone that French authorities prefer. This avoids the common rejection caused by uneven or incorrect backgrounds.

Glasses Policy

Since 2018, France no longer allows glasses in identity photos. This applies to all types: prescription glasses, sunglasses, and tinted lenses. Remove all eyewear before taking your photo.

Head Coverings

Head coverings are not allowed unless worn for religious reasons. Even then, the face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and both edges of the face must be visible.

ANTS Compliance

For French passports and carte d'identité, photos must be ANTS-compliant (Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés). This means the photo must meet strict biometric standards for facial recognition. Many photo booths in France display the "ANTS agréé" label.

Important: If applying online via the ANTS portal, you'll need a digital photo with an e-photo signature code. Physical photos are needed for in-person applications at the mairie.
