Digital vs. Printed Passport Photos

Traditionally, passport photos were printed on glossy paper and physically attached to your application. Now, most countries offer (or require) online applications where you upload a digital photo file.

The key difference: digital photos have strict technical requirements — pixel dimensions, file size limits, file format, and resolution — on top of the usual composition rules.

Important: File size limits are strict. If your photo is 250KB and the limit is 240KB, it will be rejected. WithSwag automatically optimizes file size to meet the exact requirements.

How to Create a Digital Passport Photo

  1. Take the photo — Use your phone's rear camera. Stand in front of a plain white wall with natural light from a window. No flash.
  2. Upload to WithSwag — Our tool removes the background, crops to the correct dimensions, and outputs the right pixel size.
  3. Choose your country — Select your destination country and we'll format the photo to their exact digital requirements.
  4. Download the digital file — You get a JPEG file at the correct pixel dimensions and file size, ready to upload.
Pro tip: Always take the photo at the highest resolution your phone allows. You can always downscale, but you can't add pixels that aren't there.

Technical Requirements Explained

Pixel Dimensions

Pixel dimensions define the width and height of your image in pixels. A 600×600 pixel image is a square; a 600×750 image is a rectangle (portrait orientation).

Most countries specify a minimum and maximum pixel size. Going below the minimum means your photo won't be sharp enough. Going above the maximum means the file may be too large.

File Size (KB/MB)

File size is how much space the image takes on disk. It's affected by resolution, compression quality, and image complexity. The US requires between 54KB and 240KB — a surprisingly narrow range.

If your file is too large, you need to increase JPEG compression (lower quality). If it's too small, the image may not have enough detail.

File Format

JPEG (.jpg) is the universal standard. Some countries also accept PNG. Never submit:

Color Space

The US specifically requires sRGB color space. Most phone cameras and WithSwag output sRGB by default, so this is rarely an issue. If you're using a professional camera, check your color space settings.

Common Mistakes with Digital Photos

  1. File too large — The #1 rejection reason for digital photos. Use WithSwag to auto-optimize file size.
  2. Wrong aspect ratio — US requires square (1:1), UK requires 7:9. Don't just crop randomly.
  3. HEIC format from iPhone — iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Convert to JPEG before uploading, or use WithSwag which handles this automatically.
  4. Too much compression — Over-compressing to meet file size limits makes the photo blurry. Find the right balance.
  5. Screenshot of a photo — Never take a screenshot of your photo. It reduces quality and changes dimensions. Use the original file.
  6. Filters or editing — Instagram filters, beauty mode, portrait mode blur — all will get your photo rejected.

Which Countries Require Digital Photos?

These countries now require or strongly prefer digital photo uploads for online passport applications:

Phone Camera Settings for Best Results

SettingRecommendedWhy
CameraRear (main) cameraHigher resolution than selfie camera
ResolutionHighest availableMore pixels = more flexibility when cropping
FormatJPEG (not HEIC)Universal compatibility
FlashOffCauses glare and harsh shadows
HDROffCan create unnatural skin tones
Portrait modeOffBackground blur is not allowed
Beauty modeOffAny digital alteration is banned
Grid linesOnHelps center your face
iPhone users: Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This saves photos as JPEG instead of HEIC.

Digital Photo for Visa Applications

Most visa applications (Schengen, US B1/B2, H1B, student visas) also accept or require digital photos. The requirements are usually the same as the passport photo for that country.

For US visa applications (DS-160), the digital photo must be exactly 600×600 pixels, JPEG format, between 54KB and 240KB.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a selfie for my digital passport photo?

Technically yes, if it meets all requirements. But rear cameras produce much better quality. Use a timer or have someone else take the photo for best results.

How do I convert HEIC to JPEG?

On iPhone, change Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. For existing HEIC photos, use the Preview app on Mac, or upload to WithSwag which converts automatically.

Can I crop a group photo for my passport?

Only if the original resolution is high enough. After cropping, you need at least 600×600 pixels (US) or 600×750 pixels (UK). A cropped group photo is usually too low resolution.

Is a scanned printed photo acceptable?

Some countries accept scanned photos, but the quality is usually worse than a fresh digital photo. Scanning introduces artifacts, moiré patterns, and reduces sharpness. Take a new digital photo instead.
